A Small CPA Office Saved by ConnectNC, Inc's Online Backup at the Height of Tax Season

How I learned my lesson, by G. Yakman:

Although this sounds like a title to an elementary essay, the problem is anything but elementary, but a preventative solution really was about as simple as it gets - unfortunately it was nothing that I did.

Last spring I received notice from the company that hosts my websites (ConnectNC, Inc.) that they were offering a new service to automatically update computer files to their remote location and were going to give me a free trial. It took me a while to get around to trying it as I was always too busy to squeeze in yet another life maintenance chore. Sometimes, they are hard to justify instead of producing more 'real work.' Alas, I received enough reminders that I set up the system. I uploaded a bunch of files and then got stuck. I put it on my 'to do' list to contact the company to ask for guidance on how to continue.

Two months flew by. In that time I almost finished architectural plans for my latest contract, had vacations and birthday parties with my children, filmed 2 weddings, put in tax records and medical information, wrote quite a bit of poetry and prose and was taking summer and fall graduate courses - needless to say there was a lot of data accumulated on my hard-drive in that amount of time. (I'm sure you know what I'm leading into...) The other day my hard-drive crashed. I am now faced with a slim chance of a local company getting my information back and if not I have to send my computer 3000 miles away and spend about $2000 if I want the data back.

A week without access to my computer would be bad enough, but now I have that, all the time of reloading programs and configuring the new system and putting files back onto it. My insurance on the laptop covers the cost of the new hard-drive but not accessing the old information. Needless to say I have deliverables, presentations, memories and significant research that might be excessively expensive to get back. It's been devastating and made only worse by the fact that I knew that for about $100/year it would have been preventable.

When I first analyzed the ConnectNC back-up service, I talked to a lot of people on campus and in my business community and asked them what they did. Many used external hard-drives or discs to store information. Although I didn't think these were bad options, I thought that having it stored remotely would be good for two reasons, one being that if my house burnt down, I would still have the data, the other being that if I were traveling, I could access data from anywhere. I also liked the auto backup feature as it would make it next to impossible for me to put-off backing up information. I decided that there was little to no safety risk of putting my information in a remote location
- or at least not anymore then going on the Internet where it is possible for most hackers to get into my machine remotely anyway.

Unfortunately, I didn't follow up with my own conclusions. But as I said earlier, lesson learned. ConnectNC was very gracious about accepting a new devoted customer - there were no 'we told you so's.' But that will something that will resound in my own head for years to come.
