What are
the requirements for an ADSL account?
A computer
with an Ethernet card that meets the minimum requirements.
If multiple computers are to be connected to the DSL line, an
Ethernet hub with cables for each computer will be required.
1. Check to see if there is an Ethernet card in your
computer. These can be identified by an 8-pin RJ45 female jack
that looks like a phone line jack. (Do-not Plug your phone line
into this, it is digital.)
2. If there is an Ethernet card, connect that computer to
the ADSL modem/router with a category 5 crossover cable. The
telephone line provisioned for DSL connects to the ADSL side of
the modem/router.
3. In order to connect more than one computer to the ADSL
line, a 4-, 8-, 16-, or 24-port Ethernet hub is needed. Use a
straight wired category 5 cable to make the connections.
4. A 4-port hub will connect three computers to the
Internet. The uplink port is used for the ADSL modem/router.
5. Additional Ethernet cards and cabling will be needed
for every computer on your network.
A USB-to-Ethernet converter can be used instead of an Ethernet
card if there is an available USB port. USB converters cost
about the same as an Ethernet card and the computer case does
not have to be removed.

What is
a DNS server address and do I need one?
DNS server
addresses are used to tell your computer where things are on the
Internet when you type in a web address.
In most cases you do not need to do anything with these
addresses. We assign them automatically when you connect. If you
are on a some types of networks or occasionally on some
computers it is necessary to type these addresses. In these
cases our primary DNS server address is 65.162.17.2 and the
secondary is 65.162.17.12.

What is ADSL and how
can I get it?
ADSL
(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology for
transmitting digital information at a high bandwidth on existing
phone lines to homes and businesses. Unlike regular dialup phone
service, ADSL provides a continously-available connection.
ADSL is asymmetric in that it uses most of the channel to
transmit downstream to the user and only a small part to receive
information from the user. ADSL simultaneously accommodates
analog (voice) information on the same line.
ADSL is generally offered at downstream data rates from 512 Kbps
to about 6 Mbps.

information and to sign up for ADSL

Why
does my computer disconnect from the Internet?
Here is a checklist to help
narrow down the real issue:
- Make sure your modem is
plugged directly into a wall jack. No splitters, no
extension cords, and no "surge suppressors" with a
functioning telephone wire.
- Plug a phone into the jack
your computer uses to see if there is any "static" or
humming/tones in the line. Modems detect noise our ears
can't. If there is obvious noise, static or no dial tone,
call your local phone company for phone line or jack repair.
- Update your modem drivers
to the most current driver available for that product. You
can get updated info from your computer manufacturer or the
modem manufacturer. For more, see
http://www.modemhelp.com
- Outlook Express is often
set to "Hang up after checking mail." If you disconnect
after checking mail, this may be the problem. In Outlook
Express, click on "Tools", "Options" and "Connection";
uncheck the box that says, "Hang up after Receiving E-Mail".
- If you are downloading and
not otherwise using your connection (checking email, surfing
the web), the communication occurring is only one-way and
may be interpreted as inactivity. As long as you are
actively using the Internet, you won't be disconnected for
being idle.
- If you have a WinModem, or
any modem that uses Windows to help it maintain the
connection, you will require extra RAM to perform this task.
Modems are pieces of hardware that manage and maintain your
connection, in recent years, software has been used to bring
the cost of the computer down, but relies on the computer's
resources more heavily than a hardware modem. WinModems
typically disconnect you more than a hardware modem. It is
best to avoid using these modems, although they are most
common in newer computers because they are inexpensive to
mass manufacture and require little hardware. With modems
you often get what you pay for. We have found that the 3Com
or US Robotics modems often have fewer problems.
- We have experienced
situations with disconnects for things you may not even
think of- a client called furious that we were
"disconnecting" him, We do not disconnect you. This person
was disconnecting every day at 5:30, he said he had JUST had
a new phone line run to his house and it couldn't be the
phone! After days of agonizing, we did discover that the
disconnect happened each day when his lawn sprinkler turned
on. Watch for any patterns. The more information that you
can give us about what is be happening the easier time we
will have finding the issue.
